Home Sweet Columbus

Hello sunshines!

With the recent Columbus movie that was released, which highlights the architecture of my hometown Columbus, IN, I thought I would showcase some of the landmarks!

It was August when we went back home to visit my family, so my outfits are definitely a bit on the summery side; however, I think I’m wearing pieces that can be worn into fall, or maybe even winter!

My first outfit is the sheer long floral cardigan/kimono with a slip dress and mules. The sheer cardigan/kimono is from Forever 21, I can’t seem to find this exact version on the US site, only the Canada site (here), but found a similar one on the US site that is also floral for $22.90 (here)! I plan on wearing my cardigan/kimono with jeans in the fall and winter! It’s honestly the perfect accessory that adds a pop of color and beats the winter blues.

North Christian Church

My second outfit is the long sleeved bodysuit and the pink shorts. I LOVE bodysuits (minus the occasional hassle if ya catch my drift); they’re perfect to wear with shorts, skirts, and jeans, AND no need to awkwardly mess with re-tucking the shirt. Mine is super old from American Apparel, so no longer available, but I’ve found similar cute striped ones from Asos/Free People (here) and Forever 21 (here).

Note* – All background information about these landmarks found on https://columbus.in.us/guide-to-the-architecture/

  • The Robert Stewart Bridge, built in 1997, “frames the entryway into Downtown Columbus” and is the “first cable-stayed bridge of its kind in North America.”
  • North Christian Church, designed by Eero Saarinen in 1961, the church was completed in 1964. This was Eero Saarinen’s last design.
  • Veterans Memorial was designed in 1997 by Maryann Thompson. The names of 156 veterans from Bartholomew County are carved into the sides of the limestone pillars.
  • Inn at Irwin Gardens, built in 1864 by Joseph Irwin. The building has been redesigned multiple times throughout the years as the Irwin family grew over generations. It is beautiful inside! The outside picture I took does not do the the Irwin Gardens justice.

Enjoy! Hope you’ll visit this small town filled with gems soon!

One Year Blogiversary & Goals for Year Two!

Hello sunshines!

I can’t believe I’ve officially been a life + style blogger for a year! Thank you ALL for the amazing love & support that you’ve shown me! I am truly grateful and thankful for each and every one of my blog readers, subscribers, and Instagram followers. I started day one last year 6/23/16 with zero followers and I am so proud of where I am today! And I couldn’t have done it without all of you! SO, today on the blog, I thought I would share my goals for this next year at the girl & her threads!

IMG_2843 edited

Goal #1Be more consistent with my blog posts
This first year of blogging, I’ve really only wrote new posts when I had time. With working full time and getting my MBA part time, it has been very easy for the blog to be an afterthought. This year, I want to dedicate more time to the blog and want to set a schedule so that I’ll be more consistent on when I post. I started this blog so that I could share style tips and travel guides with you all, and I’m going to be doing more of that this year!

Goal #2 – Focus on photography
Since my boyfriend (aka Mr. Photographer / Mr. P) takes my pictures and we don’t own a DSLR camera…or any camera for that matter, we invested in Ztylus Z-Prime lens for my iPhone 6S plus. This set comes with two lens, one super wide-angle and one telephoto lens. Mr. P and I have been experimenting with both lens and practicing our (well, his :)) photography skills. Not only are we trying to take better, higher quality pictures, I’m also researching photo editor software and will be learning to edit my own pictures. Let me know if you see a difference! Also I want to note that to use the Ztylus lens, you also must use their specific phone case that comes with the set!

Goal #3 Collaborate with bloggers and attend more networking events
I have met an amazing group of bloggers here in Chicago via Chicagogrammers. I want to set more time aside to attend blogger and networking events. These ladies & gents are all so amazing and I have so much to learn from them. I’m hoping to incorporate more collaborations with the bloggers that I have met, and will meet, on the girl & her threads! Maybe it’s sharing style and beauty tips, or even DIY project ideas! Stay tuned!

Goal #4 – Pre-plan my Instagram feed
I’ve been pretty good about sticking to my Instagram posting schedule of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday….but sometimes when I’m not prepared to post (i.e. picture edited, caption ready, hashtag ready etc), then I won’t post on the scheduled day. I would like to start using a planning app such as Planoly or Mosaico. That way I can see how my picture fit in with the overall aesthetic of my feed AND I can pre-plan and prepare ahead of schedule. This also means that Mr. P and I need to take more pictures so that I have a stockpile of photos. This doesn’t mean I won’t take outfit pics on the fly! But it just better prepares me for the week(s) ahead! 🙂

Goal #5 – Expand blog content
I started the blog with a focus on style, but have expanded it to include Travel posts since Mr. P and I travel a lot. I want to also blog about beauty and DIY projects. I’m currently subscribed to a few subscription boxes such as FabFitFun, which is a seasonal box that includes beauty products, wellness finds, fashion items, and jewelry! I absolutely love this box and plan on doing a reveal video every season once I receive my boxes!

Bold, edgy, & classic – 337 Brand

Hello sunshines!

Happy April! Can’t believe how fast time is flying by! How are we already a quarter done with 2017?!

Anyway, the title of this post is called “bold, edgy, & classic, and that’s because I love clothes that encompass all three of those characteristics. This is exactly why I was so excited to discover 337 Brand and to collaborate with them! 337 Brand, located in NYC, is all about designing clothes that are effortlessly stylish, with a dash of daring.

I’m wearing the mix mesh panel sweatshirt and I’m obsessed. The material is a light breathable cotton and it’s sooo soft! It’s not the heavy material that you normally think of when it comes to sweatshirts. I’m wearing a size small and it fits me perfectly. If you are looking for a slouchier fit, go one size up!  There are mesh panels that run down the front (thin) and on the sides of the top. Feelin’ risque and want to show a little skin? Wear this without a bralette! Either way, with or without a bralette, it will look equally as cool.

I went for the ultimate “too cool for school” look and styled my sweatshirt with a pair of tuxedo trousers and my new Marc Fischer block heels with laser cut design throughout the shoes (just means that there are little hole patterns on the shoe, haha). But the beauty about this sweatshirt is that you can dress it up or down. Wear it like I did with a pair of sassy pants, with a feminine A-line skirt, or a pair of leggings. The choice is yours, and I guarantee you will feel bold, edgy, & classic.

Top: 337 Brand // Bottoms: Express (sold out but similar from Bloomingdales – T Tahari , J. Crew , Forever 21) // Block Heels: Marc Fischer

Blending in with Nature

Hello sunshines!

Holiday season is upon us! Can’t believe Thanksgiving is in two days and 2016 will be over in a little over a month…time is flying by so fast! We went back to West Bloomfield, Michigan a few weekend’s ago for an early Thanksgiving celebration with Mr. Photographer’s family; we had lots and lots and lots and lots of delicious food and wine and by 8 pm that Saturday, all of us were on the couch and no one could move!! It just so happened that college football was on too. Wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without a little football (according to Mr. Photographer, LOL). The weather was perfect that weekend too, so we all went for a little walk the next morning at a nearby nature reserve. I have a cozy sleeveless turtleneck tunic on and it’s seriously the best thing ever for fall/winter when temperatures start to drop! I actually wore a pair of rainboots to walk through the nature reserve and changed to my booties only when we had to take pictures…I was warned that it may be muddy!!!

Sleeveless Turtleneck Tunic: Banana Republic (last season’s but similar styles here and here from The Limited, and how CUTE is this fringed version?!) // Top: J.Crew Perfect-fit scoopneck shirt shirt // Jeans: 7 for All Mankind (old but currently eyeing this pair by Joe’s Jeans –Jerlyn) // Bootie: Nordstrom Rack (similar version by Lucky Brand and BP, peep-toe version by Chinese Laundry) // Bag: Kate Spade (old but loving these colorblock bags by Charles Jourdan from Neiman Last Call – on sale $153! and from Modcloth)

AND last but not least, Mr. Photographer’s dad asked me if I wanted to take a picture by his convertible, so I’m like OF COURSE! 🙂

Thanks for stopping by!  Happy Thanksgiving, sunshines!

Corduroy & Over the Knee Boots

Hello sunshines!

It has been a while since my last post, 3 weeks to be exact. Life has been crazy hectic lately! Mr. Photographer and I have been on the road every single weekend the past few weeks and this trend is going to continue until the first week of December. Also, I wanted to share some exciting news with all of you – I’m getting my MBA part-time at Northwestern! It’s my first quarter of classes, so balancing work, life, and school has kept me quite busy…which is also contributing to why my blog posts have been so infrequent. Adulting is hard, am I right?!

Anyway, this past weekend, Mr. Photographer and I went back to my hometown in Columbus, IN to celebrate my little brother’s 14th birthday. I can’t believe that he’s already a freshman in high school and is growing up so fast! I always enjoy going home to spend time with my family and wish that home was closer…how about 20 mins instead of the 4 hour drive! So my little brother was the one that suggested that I take pictures next to the iconic bridge in Columbus. Many of you may not know that Columbus is actually an architectural gem and named “a Midwestern Mecca of Architecture!” I will have to stop by more hot architectural spots for pictures the next I visit home :). Columbus is further south so I was super lucky to have enjoyed beautiful almost 70’s weather this past weekend! I’ve been wanting to wear my blog outfit for quite some time now, so I was happy to finally be able to take pictures in it! The blush colored corduroy skirt from Forever 21 I actually bought back in September and have just been hoarding it until now….I’m notorious for doing this with new clothes!!!

Outfit 1 – Sweater: Urban Outfitters // Skirt: Forever 21 // Knee High Boots: DSW (Charles David boots are old and no longer available, but DSW has so many other great options…similar here and here) // Crossbody bag: Kate Spade (sold out in the Mulled Wine color, but similar wine/burgundy/purple colored bags from Kate Spade and Rebecca Minkoff) // Necklace: Baublebar (sold out but currently eyeing this one here from Baublebar!)

Outfit 2 – Top: J Crew // Jacket: Calvin Klein (old but cute black coats from Nordstrom: T-Tahari, Ralph Lauren, Guess)

Thanks for reading! Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts on the outfits 🙂

Lincoln Park // White After Labor Day

Hello sunshines!

Who’s ready for October?! Pumpkin and apple picking season is upon us and I could not be more excited! Mr. Photographer aka boo and I have an apple picking date coming up! How about you?? There’s so much to look forward to about fall, from cozy slouchy sweaters, to burning amazing smelling candles (bath & body works, anyone?!), to Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Halloween! Living in the city makes me miss passing out candy to all the adorable trick-or-treaters!

When you the hear the words, fall fashion, you immediately think of booties, sweaters, plaid scarfs, and grays/blacks etc; however, I personally don’t see why the color white is excluded from the mix! Over the weekend, I was chatting with some girlfriends about wearing white after Labor Day, and it was mixed feelings for a lot of them. I’m all for white after Labor Day!  The color white is such a staple in my wardrobe (as it is in many of your closets, I’m sure), so why limit yourself because of a so-called “fashion rule?” So, on today’s post, I’m showing you my white after Labor Day style. It was 85 degrees over the weekend so I went with a thin top, but I’m excited to wear cozy chunky sweaters/cardigans and even blazers with white jeans! Outfit details below! 🙂

My colorful striped top is from The Limited – it’s a top I’ll wear to work (either by itself or with a blazer) and on the weekends to brunch/dinner, totally versatile. The top is from last season, but The Limited always has a fabulous collection of great colorful tops! My skinny jeans are from Flying Monkey, which is sold out, BUT there’s this super cool ripped version from The Buckle by the same brand that is ON SALE, check it out here! Another great thing is that white jeans are on sale right now so I highly suggest buying a pair now if you don’t have any! My booties are from Forever 21, these are the 2nd pair of booties that I’ve bought from them (have these in Tan too) and they are SO comfortable and totally affordable (under $30). Check out some of my fav suede booties from Forever 21 here in a lower heel and here in a higher heels. To complete my outfit, I stuck with the colors and went with my blue Rebecca Minkoff purse! I love this blue purse because it literally goes with EVERYTHING and I love the pop of color! Check it out here and it’s ON SALE for only $118!

What are your thoughts on white after Labor Day?! Leave me a comment with your thoughts! Thanks for reading loves!

Navy Pier // Lace & Booties

Hello sunshines!

Hope everyone is enjoying these warm fall days we’re having! I know I am! This past weekend we were running our 20 miler on Sunday, so we snoozed until 9 AM and then decided to be touristy and explore Navy Pier. I haven’t been to Navy Pier yet this year and they just replaced the famous ferris wheel there not too long ago. The view there is also AHMAZING – you get unobstructed views of the Chicago skyline from the south to the north, so beautiful!

Since it was like 80 degrees already around 10 AM, I was seriously debating between a flowy summer dress and sandals or something that was a little bit more fall-y. I ultimately decided to go with the more fall-y option (booties mean fall, right?!) and went with a long-sleeved open back shirt, a blue lace skirt, and booties! I cannot wait to wear this blue lace skirt sometime in October when the weather gets cooler and I’ll pair it with my favorite chunky sweater :)! Also, I’ve owned this entire outfit for years now and they are still in fabulous condition! I am all for buying clothing that are good quality and will last. That being said, I did decide it was time to treat myself and buy myself a new pair of booties that are maybe in a maroon/burgundy color…check out what I’m eyeing below!

Shirt: Urban Outfitters (old) // Skirt: Top Shop (old but similar from Forever 21 here, Express has one in Maroon and Black — love the Maroon color) // Booties: Forever 21 (similar option here that I really like and may purchase!) // Purse: Kate Spade (Sold out but I am loving a similar colorblock one, the Cobble Hill Toddy) // Necklace: Stella & Dot (old but the Stella & Dot Luna Pendant stacked with the Double Horn Pendant is super cute)

Maroon/Burgundy booties that I am currently eyeing (click on picture to view link!):

What are you currently eyeing for fall?! Thanks for reading – I hope you enjoyed this post! Leave me a comment & let me know your thoughts!
